Carving a Wood Spirit into a Bar of Soap (Using Only a Plant Label)

An accessible, low‑risk way to learn the fundamentals of carving faces

Carving a wood spirit is one of those timeless crafts that looks far more complicated than it really is. Traditionally, you’d reach for a block of basswood and a razor‑sharp knife, but there’s a brilliant beginner friendly alternative that requires almost no tools at all.

A bar of soap and a plastic plant label.

This simple setup is perfect for teaching carving to young people, practising facial features before committing to wood or just enjoying a mindful, low‑pressure craft session. Soap behaves like a soft carving medium, and a plant label (when trimmed to a pointed edge) becomes a surprisingly capable carving tool.

I have uploaded a video on how to do this.
